Marina Abramović, Rhythm 0, 1974

“This piece was primarily a trust exercise, in which she told viewers she would not move for six hours no matter what they did to her.  She placed 72 objects one could use in pleasing or destructive ways, ranging from flowers and a feather boa to a knife and a loaded pistol, on a table near her and invited the viewers to use them on her however they wanted.
Initially, Abramović said, viewers were peaceful and timid, but it escalated to violence quickly.  “The experience I learned was that … if you leave decision to the public, you can be killed… I felt really violated: they cut my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the public. Everyone ran away, escaping an actual confrontation.”
This piece revealed something terrible about humanity, similar to what Philip Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment or Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiment, both of which also proved how readily people will harm one another under unusual circumstances.”
This performance showed just how easy it is to dehumanize a person who doesn’t fight back, and is particularly powerful because it defies what we think we know about ourselves. I’m certain the no one reading this believes the people around him/her capable of doing such things to another human being, but this performance proves otherwise.”

This is Peanut the turtle, shortly after being found in Missouri in 1993. She was taken to to a zoo in St. Louis where the six-pack ring was removed. It seems that she was trapped in the plastic ring as a young turtle and was unable to free herself. Subsequently her shell moulded itself to the plastic ring and she grew in the strange shape you see here.Unfortunately the damage is permanent, but peanut is expected to live a long life and today she serves as a mascot for the fight against beach littering. Please, always remember to clean up after yourself at the beach.

This makes me so fucking sad and angry. Like seriously how hard is it to pick up your crap and put it in a bin?

Something else you can do, something I do whenever I’m walking to work or anywhere is, if you see a four pack/six pack/whatever, pick it up and rip it apart so no connections are left, then bin it. If it gets dumped whole in a refuse site it can still cause damage.

underthevastblueseas: Underwater Rivers?

A group of amateur cave explorers discovered a river in Mexico with banks, trees and leaves just like an ordinary river, but with an additional metric shit ton of “WTF,” because they were hovering 25 feet over it in scuba gear when they discovered it.

While underwater water doesn’t seem possible, the “river” is actually a briny mix of salt water and hydrogen sulfide. It’s much more dense than regular salt water, so it sinks to the bottom and forms a distinct separation that acts and flows like a river.

Deep sea lakes look like normal lakes, complete with sandy and rocky shores. Scientist call these lakes “cold seeps,” but they’re a hotbed for life, because apparently waterfront real estate is a hot commodity under water, too. The “rocky” shores are actually made up of hundreds of thousands of mussels. Even weirder, the lakes under the waves have waves of their own.

“It’s clearly a crisis of two things: of consciousness and conditioning. We have the technological power, the engineering skills to save our planet, to cure disease, to feed the hungry, to end war; But we lack the intellectual vision, the ability to change our minds. We must decondition ourselves from 10,000 years of bad behavior. And, it’s not easy.”

This calf was born in the truck whilst his mother was going to the slaughterhouse. He was abandoned on the road. As a mother it should have been a great day but instead, she was put to death. She couldn’t even say hello to him let alone goodbye. Luckily for the little one, Traffic Police rescued him. Whilst he will start a new life, his mother died a slow and painful death. This is the reality for billions of animals per year. You have the power to change reality. Go Vegan.Submitted by Mary.

This makes me clench my teeth.
HOW. HOW can people be a part of this? A meal means more to you??
Go fuck yourself.

Vegans, we can still eat meat and stop the cruelty. The cruel part is how they are treated during life not how they die. You don’t think a wolf is evil for eating other animals. Stop the cruelty but don’t go vegan, rather eat local, organic food where the animals have the freedom to live and then nourish us all. Anyway if humans just set all the cows, chickens and other common barnyard animals free then they will die out for they depend on us to keep them alive while we depend on them to provide our protein. You can change reality without having to change yourself or your eating habits. Don’t Go Vegan. We have enough self righteous idiots in the world. Go Organic.
